I spend a lot of time online, well, maybe not a lot of time, but enough time, and one thing I tend to see whenever the subject of politics comes up is just how much people have no idea what free speech is or what it entails. For starters, doesn’t mean you can say whatever the hell you want with no repercussions. If you’re a member of a message board or social media site and you say something the proprietors don’t like or a majority of users don’t like, you can be banned. That’s not a violation of your right to free speech. The First Amendment only protects you from the government censoring your speech by way of arresting or incarcerating you. It doesn’t prohibit private entities like said message board or social media site from deciding your bullshit is offensive and they don’t want it around.
So no, you can’t go on Facebook and post comment after meme after macro about your real opinion of black people or Muslims or Mexicans or gays or women or Jews or whatever other group you feel like shitting on that day. Facebook has the right to terminate your account and tell you to GTFO and you have no recourse. None.
To add a comment about a recent topic that has been in the news thanks to Herr Trumpenfuhrer, our fascist overlord, flag burning is protected speech. I don’t care if you don’t like it. I would never burn the flag, but if someone else wants to, provided they didn’t steal it, it’s their property, and they can do what they want with it. SCOTUS has ruled that it’s Constitutionally-protected free speech, and what’s more, you can’t strip someone of their citizenship for doing it — the government doesn’t have the right to do that, no matter what their reason is. Maybe it would behoove this unmitigated piece of shit to actually read the fucking thing once in a while. *sigh*
