I’ve always enjoyed poetry and prose and never felt that rhyming meters were necessarily needed to make the piece enjoyable. I think free-form or free verse or stream of consciousness, whatever it goes by now, can have just as much punch and power as a piece where the last word of every line rhymes or the last word of every other line, whatever the meter is. Whenever I had to write a poem in school for one class or another, I always wrote in a rhyming meter, only because that’s what I thought poetry was. I hadn’t been exposed to much of it yet, so my knowledge was rather limited. Now, I would write whatever came to mind about that topic or subject, not focusing on making words rhyme.
