What to choose, what to choose…

When I started college, one of the first things I had to do was choose my major. A lot of pressure to put on an 18-year-old’s shoulders, I know, but I didn’t want to be that student who kept “General” as their degree field until the last possible minute. What ended up happening was me going through four different majors in a short period of time. At UIC, I was a nursing major. Every day I wish I’d stuck with that, nurses are always in short supply, but when we moved to Georgia, I decided to go into Business, and I went through three different majors before settling on one. First, I majored in Economics. Then, I changed to Forensic Accounting. Next, it was Corporate Finance. Finally, I settled on Marketing, and while I’m glad I have my degree…I wish I’d stuck with nursing when I left Chicago. I wouldn’t be where I am now, at least economically.

For those of you who went to college, did you settle on a major fairly soon or did you do like I did and hop around for a while before settling on what you ultimately graduated with? Did you regret doing that? Do you wish you’d chosen something else, and if so, what would it have been?

I generalized until end of Sophomore year, where I declared Biotechnology as my major. After a year of that, I switched to Public Health, which backed me up quite a bit; took another 7 semesters to graduate. I don’t regret it, because I loved the coursework, but I want to be a public health/environmental health writer/promoter, and that is proving to be difficult. Right now I work in compliance and it’s awful. I keep thinking if I majored in journalism, perhaps that would better my odds, but I can’t know for sure.

I settle on becoming a secondary education (history teacher)immediately and realized too late that it wasn’t what I wanted to do. But I don’t regret ending with a history degree.
