Today’s Word of the Day is demeanor which means, “behavior toward others.” I always thought this word meant things like your attitude, your body language, facial expression, and/or tone of voice. That’s the way I’ve always used it. It turns out it refers to actions, rather than non-verbal communication. I think my demeanor can sometimes read as frosty or standoffish, particularly when I’m in a situation where I don’t know anyone well or at all, but in that sense, I’m referring to my body language or facial expressions, not my specific behavior. Even if I’m incredibly uncomfortable or shy in a social setting, I’m nothing if not unfailingly polite. It’s one thing to have everyone think of me as the mousy wallflower; it’s another if they also think I’m a bitch. I think that’s a great piece of advice for everyone, actually. Don’t be a bitch. Or a dick. Or anything negative. Whether you’re religious or not, the whole “do unto others” bit is actually a solid rule to follow.
